BEFORE YOU STRUGGLE ANOTHER DAY WITH "PEOPLE PROBLEMS"
READ THIS
Right now there are more employee engagement opportunities for business owners, leaders, and managers than ever before. There are also more opportunitites for apathy in the workplace, miscommunication within and between teams, and inconsistent or nonexistent company culture.
The last couple of years have changed the way people and businesses operate creating uncertainty, frustration, animosity, and even a sense of isolation and loneliness.
TO BE FAIR...
Leading a team has always been challenging. And to make things worse...
For most leaders, being in charge of a team is both rewarding and frustrating.
It can be a real emotional roller coaster.
… when your team is enthusiastic, adaptive, and innovative, you feel great, your team is aligned and getting results, boosting revenue and your reputation as a leader.
… when your team is weighed down by poor decision making, the blame game, bad attitudes, and missed deadlines and opportunities, you feel stressed and helpless and the financial pressure doesn’t make things any easier.
Some days feel like an endless cycle of conflicts and blindsides.
Dealing with so many different personalities, opinions, strengths, and weaknesses ... you get one problem sorted out only to have two more pop up.
It feels like everything rests on your shoulders.
Because when you’re the one in charge, there’s even more at stake, right?
THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND SUCCESSFUL LEADERS
DEVELOP. EMPOWER. LEAD.
People issues don't just go away over time. Pretending they're not happening or hoping something will miraculously change tomorrow allows them to fester, boil over, and spread.
When left unchecked, even a small issue can grow into something bigger and undermind an entire team, crush your company culture, or lead to brain drain when crucial members of the team check out mentally or leave the organization entirely.
After more than 25 years in the training and development industry, logging over 2,000 days of training and working with tens of thousands of individuals through training and coaching, I've learned a thing or two.
1. "People skills" make or break leaders
2. When feedback is missing, lacking, or ignored, nothing gets better
3. High-performing teams don't magically happen (behind every great team is a great leader)
4. Empowered, innovative teams find a way, no matter what
THE MISSING PIECES
COACHing. Culture. commitment.
In order to develop a high-performing team, it comes down how well you can communicate your vision to your team in a way that's meaningful to them. That last word matters a lot.
Like the platinum rule, treat others they way they want to be treated, you need to be able to speak to the members of your team in a way that is most motivating for them. Unless, of course, you enjoy repeating yourself, wondering way they don't take your feedback, and struggling to figure out why nobody seems to really care about the work they do.
The crazy thing is, it's not that hard, but this critical skill isn't part of traditional management and leadership training.
A Coach Leader is someone who brings the mindset and skillset of a coach into a leadership role.
I include mindset, because there really is a shift in how you approach people when see yourself in a coaching role. It's not about micro-managing, barking orders, or letting them do whatever they want, you are guiding them and helping them overcome the obstacles that get in their way.
Coaching skills are the competitive edge of high-performing leaders. They help you get through difficult conversations productively and get through to even the most challenging personality types.
Think about that for a minute. If a coach's clients don't take their advice and nothing gets better in their clients' lives, that coach won't have clients for long.
Coaches are really good at understanding what drives a person, how they want to be talked to, and how best to move them into action.
We see the same skills at play when a sports team is lead by a really effective coach, someone who brings out the best in each player and in the team overall. They create a culture that encourages individual development, teamwork, and a commitment to a common vision.
These are the same skills needed in business leadership.
TRAINING COACHES & COACHING LEADERS
As a trainer of coaches and a coach for leaders, my professional life is all about coaching. Even though coaching is the common thread, there is a lot of variety in what I offer my Coach Leader clients.
Time is often the most limited resource a leader has. That's why many of my coaching clients ask that our one-on-one coaching sessions include both coaching for them and also training in Coach Leadership.
Our initital sessions often start with challenges that are more internal. It's not yet about interpersonal skill building, it's about about mindset, habits, or emotions that are getting in their way. This is what often comes to mind when many people think of high-impact, executive coaching.
Most of my clients are completely new to the idea of coaching in the workplace and we often start our Coach Leader training with situational coaching. This means they bring the people problems that are front-and-center and causing the most frustration for them right now. We develop a game plan for handling those situations and I teach them the coaching skills they need to address the issues.
At some point, when the people issue fires are under control and my Coach Leader clients they have their mindset dialed in, they get really interested in understanding how I do what I do. This is when I get more systematic with their Coach Leadership training. We look to the future and their longer term goals and I teach them the coaching skills that are going to open up that next level of performance.
This is when it gets really interesting and exciting, we move from reactional to reflective. We consider the best way to develop their company culture and team so they can accomplish their goals for their company and their career. Coach Leadership becomes ingrained in the culture and the team becomes accustomed to recieving and acting on feedback.
In addition to their Coach Leadership training, there are times when my clients ask me to set up a Mastermind for their employees. I get together with their team weekly and help them work through issues that are holding the team back. I also teach them skills to enhance their performance and their communcation with each other. We focus on building trust, community, and ultimately colloboration and commitment. I routinely hear from people in these Masterminds that they can't imagine other workplaces offering this kind of support and training.
Sorry, I went too fast, I think this saves but the next thing doesn't.

These Are Fundamental Leadership Challenges
And it feels great, as it should. You're officially a leader. You're making it happen!
If you've been in leadership for more than a day, then you know the kinds of
inter- and intra- employee issues that come up ... on a daily basis.
Each employee and every team is unique,
challenging both your skillset and your mindset.
What It Means To Be a Coach Leader
Coaches has always brought leadership to their teams, they understand that coaching and leadership are a pack deal. Yet in the business world, we focus on leadership while sidelining coaching. When you think about how important it is
wisdom is abandoned and leadership and coaching are not seen as a powerful duo.
when we move to leadership in the business world, coaching is pushed to the sidelines.
An empowered mindset and solid skills are the foundation of leadership.
Struggles with things like imposter syndrome, confidence, overwhelm, and procrastination sabotage your success. It's really hard to engage with employees, let alone empower them, if there's a voice in your head telling you "you're not cut out for leadership," "nothing is going to work," or a million other things we say to ourselves when we don't have our mindset dialed in for success.
When I say, "solid skills," I mean next-level, coaching skills applied to a business environment. The kind of coaching that ripples across your team and leaves a lasting legacy for you professionally.
An amazing thing happens when you see positive changes happening with your employees and your team, when you know exactly what someones needs to hear and how they need you to say it ... it builds your confidence, improves your self-talk, and strengthens your mindset.
Your mindset and skillset reinforce each other, they work in unison.
They are also what sets you apart as a world-class leader and are key to building an empowered, high-performing team.
The Key to Building A High-Performing Team
The secret ingredient in-demand leaders use to build a high-performing teams is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming).
NLP is a comprehensive model of communication and change. It is the secret sauce behind successful leaders, business owners, and coaches that allows them to produce incredible, rapid results for the people they work with.
The name Neuro Linguistic Programming is based on the analogy of a computer. If you know how to program your computer, you can get it to do anything you want, right? Similarly, if you know how to speak the language of the brain (Neuro + Linguistic), then you can "program" your brain to do what you want as well.
In essence, NLP is the study of patterns. With the ability to quickly identify someone's pattern or program, then you have the key to unlock their potential and accelerate their results.
As an Coach Leader, you have the opportunity to make a lasting difference in how your employees approach their work and each other.
